A selective, systemic hormone herbicide for broadleaf weed control in cereals, maize, rice, flax and grassland. Selective because graminaceous crops metabolise it quickly while dicot weeds cannot – the weeds grow themselves to death while the crop is untouched.

Mode of action

MCPA is a synthetic auxin that mimics indole-3-acetic acid. It binds the TIR1/AFB receptor family, triggering degradation of Aux/IAA repressor proteins and unleashing ARF-mediated transcription. The result is uncontrolled cell division and elongation: stems twist and split, roots deform, vascular tissue collapses, and the plant dies. Cereals detoxify MCPA by rapid metabolism; susceptible dicots cannot, which is the basis of selectivity.
