Mode of action

After spraying, the ester penetrates the leaf cuticle and is hydrolysed by plant esterases to 2,4-D acid. The acid acts as a synthetic auxin: it binds the TIR1/AFB co-receptor complex, drives degradation of Aux/IAA repressors and produces sustained, disorganised gene expression. Susceptible broadleaf plants show epinasty, stem splitting and root deformation before dying. Cereals and other grasses metabolise the acid rapidly and are tolerant.
