Mode of action

2,4-D is a synthetic auxin. It binds the TIR1/AFB auxin co-receptor complex, destabilising Aux/IAA transcriptional repressors and driving sustained, disorganised expression of growth genes. Sensitive dicots respond with epinasty, stem splitting, callus overgrowth at the nodes, vascular collapse and death. Grasses metabolise the molecule quickly, which is why cereals, maize and pasture are tolerant.
