MCPA-Isooctyl Ester

The ester form of MCPA. Esterification makes the molecule lipophilic, so it cuts through the waxy weed cuticle faster and resists wash-off; inside the plant it is hydrolysed back to active MCPA acid. It is the modern, lower-volatility replacement for 2,4-D butyl ester in cereal and maize programmes.

Mode of action

Applied post-emergence, the ester penetrates the leaf cuticle and is hydrolysed by plant esterases to MCPA acid. The acid acts as a synthetic auxin, binding TIR1/AFB receptors, degrading Aux/IAA repressors, and driving uncontrolled cell division and elongation. Susceptible dicot weeds cannot metabolise the acid and die; graminaceous crops detoxify it rapidly.
